Educational communications in the digital society: New formats of interaction between lecturer and student

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the impact of digital technologies on the nature and organisation of interactions between lecturers and students in modern education. The research methodology included a theoretical analysis of scholarly sources, comparative analysis, systems analysis, systematisation and generalisation. The results indicate a steady increase in the effectiveness of digital educational communications. This is evidenced by the rise in participation in online learning, which increased from 21.4% to 34.8% in the European Union, and the high level of integration of Learning Management Systems. These systems are used regularly by approximately 78% of students. Synchronous formats were found to be most effective when explaining complex material and providing immediate feedback, while asynchronous environments and combined platforms were more effective in developing student autonomy, in-depth engagement with educational content, and organising group interaction. Student-centred, collaborative and connectivist approaches contribute to developing student independence and intensifying their interaction. These approaches enable the combination of individual learning and team-based activity, creating conditions for a flexible educational process. Digital platforms were found to provide automated, personalised assessment of students’ learning achievements. They enable the provision of timely feedback and dynamic progress monitoring. They also facilitate the organisation of group work through collaborative projects and discussions. Taken together, these factors improve the quality of educational interaction. Videoconferencing ensures direct contact between participants in the learning process and enables immediate feedback. The results of the study may be used by lecturers, the administration of higher education institutions and developers of educational programmes to improve the organisation of digital educational communication and enhance the effectiveness of interaction between lecturer and student
